Rafting is a sport which consists of doing a descent on a river on rapids or white water in inflatable rafts. The rapids are classified from a simple class 1 to a very dangerous class 6, the intermediaries are classified with a plus sign.
In 1842 the lieutenant John Fremont of the United States Army used the first raft, he used it to explore the river Platte. This boat consisted of 4 tubes of inflatable rubber wrapped. 27 years later Fremont’s John Wesley Powell and a group of brave adventurers did their first journey in the Grand Canyon on the Colorado River. They traveled in wooden canoes, opening the route for the millions of adventurers who would thereafter follow.
The first people to navigate this river were a group of Poles in the 70s, they were accompanied by one local from Jalcomulco, Celestino Alarc ón. Since then other adventurers have come from Canada and the United States, becoming the instructors from whom we have learned everything related to rafting.
Geographically if we look for this river on a map it will only appear as the Antigua River, but we the guides of the area have divided it into three sections. The first section from it’s source in the mountains has been named Barranca Grande, 40km of continuous rapids. The middle section, named Pescados, begins at the Pescados Bridge 18km upstream from the village of Jalcomulco. It is open for rafting all year round. The lower section known as Antigua is the section from the village of Jalcomulco, downstream.
This section of the river is located between the Pico de Orizaba and Cofre de Perote and is a trip of 40 km, made up of rapids class III, IV and V.
The river weaves through a narrow canyon with cliff walls of more than 300 meters height, with lush vegetation and breathtaking waterfalls.
